Rent Squatchy, a solar-powered camper van in Durango, CO , a professionally converted boondocking rig with a queen bed, full kitchen, and pet-friendly setup.
About This Van
Squatchy is a professionally converted camper van rental based in Durango, Colorado, built on a 2021 Dodge Promaster high-roof chassis and ready to take you deep into the backcountry without sacrificing comfort. Converted in July 2021, this Squatchy was designed from the ground up for boondocking and dry camping, which means you can park wherever the road takes you and stay as long as you like.
Durango sits at the edge of some of the most spectacular public land in the American Southwest, and Squatchy is purpose-built to explore it. With solar power, a 21-gallon water tank, a full kitchen, and a comfortable queen-sized sleeping platform, this camper van covers all the essentials.
The build quality shows in the details: a wood block countertop, gold stainless steel inset sink, dimmable overhead LEDs, and thoughtful storage throughout. If you want to skip the crowded campgrounds and find your own patch of wilderness in Colorado, Squatchy is the camper van to do it in.
Squatchy features a raised platform bed positioned to take full advantage of the high-roof build, giving you plenty of headroom when sitting up in the morning. The mattress is a queen-sized Casper foam mattress, though it is worth noting that the length has been shortened to fit the van interior.
Solo travelers will have no issues at all, and couples can make it work comfortably by sleeping diagonally. The owner lived in this Squatchy for five months, which speaks to how livable the sleeping setup really is.
Two flexible reading lights above the bed each include a USB port, so you can charge your devices and wind down with a book without getting up.
- Bed type: Queen (shortened length) Casper foam mattress
- Sleeping capacity: 2
- Reading lights with USB ports above the bed
- Raised platform with large storage space underneath
The kitchen in Squatchy is genuinely functional, not just a token setup. A large wood block countertop gives you real prep space, and the inset gold stainless steel sink makes cleanup easy after a day on the trail.
The Dometic CRX-65 is one of the better 12-volt fridges on the market, offering both refrigerator and freezer compartments so you can keep food fresh for extended trips. A two-burner stove rounds out the cooking capabilities, and with the passenger seat swiveling to face inward and a bench seat on the other side, you have a proper dining area to enjoy your meals.
- Dometic CRX-65 12-volt refrigerator and freezer
- Two-burner propane stove
- Kitchen sink with wood block countertop
- Bench seating and swivel passenger seat for dining
- Two 110-volt outlets for small appliances
Squatchy is set up to run comfortably off-grid for multiple days without needing to plug in anywhere. The solar array keeps the batteries topped up during daylight hours, and the inverter gives you access to standard 110-volt power when you need it.
Two flexible USB reading lights above the bed and dimmable LED lighting throughout the van are all powered through this system, keeping your overnight power draw manageable.
- Solar: 2 x 100-watt solar panels (200 watts total)
- Battery bank: 2 x 100Ah AGM batteries (200Ah total)
- Inverter: 2000-watt continuous / 4000-watt peak DC-AC inverter
- Two 110-volt outlets
Squatchy carries a 21-gallon fresh water tank, which is generous for a camper van of this size and gives you several days of comfortable use for cooking, dishwashing, and rinsing off. The water is not rated as potable, so plan to bring your own drinking water or a filtration solution.
There is no indoor toilet, so you will want to plan around access to pit toilets or bring your own solution for backcountry camping. The outdoor shower is a great feature for rinsing off after a hike or a swim, and it keeps the interior clean and dry.
- Fresh water tank: 21 gallons
- Gray water tank: 7 gallons
- Outdoor shower included
- Water not rated as potable
- No indoor toilet
Squatchy is built on the 2021 Dodge Promaster platform, which is a front-wheel-drive van known for being relatively easy to maneuver compared to rear-wheel-drive alternatives. At 18 feet long, it fits in most standard parking spots and handles well on mountain roads, which matters a lot when you are navigating the passes and canyon roads around Durango.
The automatic transmission keeps driving stress-free, and the backup camera takes the guesswork out of tight reversals at trailheads and campgrounds. The van seats two passengers, both with seatbelts.
- Length: 18 feet
- Transmission: Automatic
- Fuel: Gas
- Seatbelts: 2
- Backup camera
- New Falken All-Season tires (2026 update)
Squatchy is one of the more capable off-grid camper van rentals available in the Durango area. The 200-watt solar array and 200Ah AGM battery bank give you a solid power foundation for running the Dometic fridge, lighting, USB charging, and the 110-volt outlets over multiple days without hookups.
The 21-gallon water tank extends your range further, and the outdoor shower adds a level of comfort that makes longer boondocking stints genuinely enjoyable. Two MaxxAir vent fans, one at the front and one at the back, keep air moving through the van even when temperatures climb.
A bike rack is also available as an optional rental add-on, making Squatchy a natural fit for the trail-heavy landscape around Durango and the San Juan Mountains. This is a camper van built for people who want to get away from the crowds and stay out as long as possible.
